If we go back to the times when illustrious things were carved in stone and valuable things were surrounded by walls and stood at the highest point of the village, getting to know and explore such emblematic houses as the one we’ll describe below makes us feel like treasure hunters. We’re surrounded by an idyllic, lush, and wild environment, yet also friendly and accessible, full of amenities and just half an hour from the capital of the Principality.
We’re not talking about distant destinations, because Proaza, as a municipality, has everything we could want for a fulfilling life, and now fiber optic internet has arrived, so there’s no excuse not to take the plunge and cross that threshold that separates you from a more sustainable lifestyle.
With the setting in mind, let’s get down to specifics. Today we present a house dating back to 1300, with hundreds of years reflected in every piece, every plank, in generations filled with change, where the traces of another era are so evident that they impress at every turn. Few of us can appreciate the beauty in a large, carved stone, perhaps because we struggle to imagine the difficulty of creating such structures with nothing more than raw materials and the talent of artisans and laborers, who were surely few in number. Its legacy is indelible today, for the passage of time has not diminished its beauty. This house has been meticulously maintained and adapted to modern times with double-glazed windows, under-roof insulation, a modern electrical system, and heating that doesn’t detract from the originality of its walls.
It’s also in a walled plot of just over 1000 square meters, and elevated above the rest of the village, affording it the best views of the valley. No matter how many photos we post of these views, there’s no way to truly capture the wonder of waking up each morning to find the clouds in a different position, enveloping the mountains.
The house itself, could be described as two ‘turrets’, boasting 460 square meters spread across three levels. Highlights include a grand living room with a stunning library, a heated gallery, a garden brimming with fruit trees, two spacious studios and a gym, and a bright, airy attic nearing completion (perfect for adding that final personal touch we all love). There are also three bedrooms, two of them doubles, a full bathroom, and a hallway that provides access to the furthest reaches of the house. This, being the former stable, would allow us, after some renovation, to add a large extra bedroom to the house, or any other possible use, as the house is certainly not lacking in either square footage or space.
Outside we must mention the traditional Asturias ‘Horreo’ (a granary on stilts), in an enviable state of preservation, as well as the greenhouse area, the laundry room, the terrace with outdoor furniture surrounded by fruit trees, where, in addition to apple trees, we find kiwi plants, two guava trees, and other flowering plants, and even another greenhouse…
The house has two entrances, both for vehicles and in a distinctly medieval style, and the rear entrance is next to the barbecue area, because what you can never miss is lunchtime in Asturias. Next to it is the shed with the oil-fired boiler and its tank, and we must also consider a wood-burning stove that could serve as the heating element for this majestic house.
We could give many more details, but why? Wouldn’t it be better to see it in person?
